A Study on the Ideal Level and the Performance Level of the Head Nurse Role


Abstract
The purpose of this study was;
To find out the ideal level and the performance level of the head nurses in the head nurse role in patient care management, human resource management, operational management, and in research-teaching area.
To find out the differences between the ideal level and the performance level.
To find out the factors influencing the performance.
The data of this study were collected by self-reported questionnaire composed of 5 point rating scale to measure the ideal level and the performance level of the head nurse role. The respondents were 59 head nurses in 4 general hospitals in Gwang ju. Data was administrated from Mar. 3 through 17, 1989.
Analysis of the data by Percentages, Pearson-Correlatoon and ANOVA. The results were as follows;
1. Mean of the ideal level in the head nurse role was 4.25 out of 5.0; Patient care management 4.31,
Human resource management 4.18,
Operational management 3.91,
Research-teaching area 3.74.
2. Mean of the performance level in the head nurse role was 4.00 out of 5.0; Patient care management 4.14,
Human resource management 3.83,
Operational management 4.07,
Research-teaching area 3.74.
3. The widest difference between the ideal level and the performance level was noted in research teaching area (0.44).
In comparing each items;
Calculation and request the nursing manpower of the ward (1.08), Suggestion on new personnel employment (0.93), Meeting for improvement of nursing procedures (0.81), Attendance meeting for development of the nursing quality (0.77), Preparation of teaching materials (0.74), Encouragement for development of new nursing procedures (0.71) in order.
4. The level of performance according to the head nurse¢¥s general characteristics (age, education, clinical experience, experience as a head nurse) was not significant statistically.
